Blog Challenge - Head to Head - SIX Free Tank Patterns!

I don't know about you but I LOVE sewing patterns. I love them even more when they are free. To get ready for our extreme summer weather here in AZ, I began my hunt for the perfect free tank top pattern. And I thought I'd share my findings! I figured if I was going to compare patterns, I may as well do it in a useful way. SO, I made up all six of these tanks in our pointelle solids! This way you can easily compare fit and drape across the different patterns. In addition to my fit results, I'll also be sharing details about the pattern. Is it size inclusive? Does it offer layers? Ooh, how about a projector file, or at least a projector friendly A0? I'll give you all the goods below.

My makes are listed in no particular order. I was not compensated for my opinion or review. General note, I am 4'11, with an 8" side waist. I did not adjust any of these patterns for length.

Are you as excited as I am to see them in action? Let's do this!

How to get it: Join the Halla Patterns Facebook group for the code

Size I Made: 6/10

Projector Friendly File: Yes! A layered A0 file

Layers: yep!

I've been eyeing the stardust tank for a while (even had it printed in A0), but was so intimidated by the tricky looking colorblocking, I never pulled the trigger. The simple version is just perfect to kick off this comparison. I made the "basic" tank verision, with a hem rather than a band. I love the fit, which is no surprise since all the Halla patterns I've tried have fit so well right out the door. I love that the A0 was layered, it made using my projector super quick and easy. I have a feeling you'll be seeing more of these as the summer goes on!

Usually, I'm a relatively lazy sewist. Scratch that, I'm an economical sewist when it comes to time. As much as I'd love to, I can't live in my sewing studio. So I'm quick to skip little extras, like this front pocket, so that I can complete things faster. I'm so glad I didn't this time! This adorable little pocket is far from functional, but it gives the tank a little something extra. This pattern has a center back seam, which makes sway back adjustments much easier if needed.

The Lago tank has been a go to tank of mine for a while, and it didn't disappoint this time! I love how quick this tank comes together, especially with a projector friendly A0. This will be a great grab and go top all summer long!

This "layering tank" lives up to its name! It is by far the most fitted of the tanks I'm comparing today, and would be great under a loose top or over-sized sweater! It was a super quick sew, even though I had to print and tape haha.

Total Number of Sizes Offered: 11 (2 - 22)

Maximum Measurements: 44 / - / 50

I really liked the subtle swing of this tank, without feeling too tent-like, and I feel like the neckline is flattering. I did have some trouble understanding the armscye binding directions and ended up changing to bands. I'd like to try this one again, in DBP or Rayon Spandex. The center back seam makes adjustments a breeze, and the 36" Copy Shop file was a projector user's dream!

Total Number of Sizes Offered: 14 (00 - 24)

Maximum Measurements: 50 / - / 54

Size I Made: 8/10

I was so excited when I found the Trendy Tank! A free tank with a V Neck? Sign me up! It didn't disappoint. It has an option for a straight hem or a curved back hem. I chose straight hem for this one, but may try the curved hem next time! I did have to print and assemble my pattern (no A0 available for this one) but I did save my pieces, just in case, and I'm so glad I did!

So what do you think? Which is your favorite? I'll admit, I can't decide! I'm just happy to have so many great staple tanks to kick off the warm weather. Have you added any pointelle to your stash yet? We just stocked three new colors (Denim, Aqua and Sage) and I'm obsessed with them all!

What other comparison posts would you like to see in the future?

I am always late to the party - but I really appreciate your posting these. I have become very sensitive to heat and tanks are my go to for this stifling heat. Love that I can see them on you and can choose which ones I should do.

The v-neck was easy! It’s a lapped neckband, rather than mitered, so I’d say it’s a great one to try if you’re new to v necks. Take it slow, just going step by step.

I have made some of these. I chickened out when it came to the v-neck. How difficult was it?
